Dr. Ruben Portugal is a Data Scientist for Johego. In this capacity, he is responsible for streamlining, strengthening, automating, and migrating Johego’s existing data pipeline to the cloud. He’s also employing natural language processing and machine learning to analyze and categorize semi-structured text corpora based on transcribed question-and-answer phone conversations.
After being a university instructor in South America, a research scientist in France and Belgium, and an entrepreneur and teacher in Australia, Ruben landed in St. Louis ready to jump in the data science field. He expects his experience in dealing with simulations of physical systems will be an invaluable asset for his position at Johego.
Ruben has a BS from the University of the Republic, Montevideo, Uruguay, a PhD in physics from the Catholic University of Chile, and a Master in IT Studies from the Australian National University. He’s also recipient of the L. Falicov Award for best graduate research from the Division of Magnetic Materials and Nanostructures of the AVS – American Institute of Physics.
When Ruben is not playing soccer with his son, he enjoys reading about developments in physics, 20th Century history, and poems by Antonio Machado.
